We believe the symbol of the blue tree now holds a whole new meaning for so many. Acting as a source of conversation that helps save lives, the blue trees are visual reminders to check in on loved ones and mates who might be struggling. There is hope. There is support.

What is now an international movement began one night in 2014 when friends Jayden Whyte and Tjarda Tiedeken snuck out and painted a tree blue on Jayden's family farm in Mukinbudin. The tree was painted out of love, mischief and friendship, and Jayden wondered how his dad would react when he saw it.

The Blue Tree Project began in Western Australia and encourages people to choose a dead tree that needs a "blue lease on life" and paint it in memory of a friend who lost their life to depression or had battled the illness.

The Blue Tree Project is a mental health initiative. The Project's mission is to help spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up. In 2023 the ACT Government launched the Blue Tree Project in the ACT by painting our first blue tree along Hindmarsh Drive in Lyons.
